Robert Irwin Breaks Down in Tears Remembering Late Dad Steve Irwin During Emotional Dancing With the Stars Performance

The ballroom of Dancing With the Stars was overcome with emotion on Tuesday night when Robert Irwin paid tribute to his late father, Steve Irwin, and his mother, Terri Irwin, in one of the most touching performances of the season. The 21-year-old wildlife conservationist and son of the beloved “Crocodile Hunter” left both the audience and judges in tears during the show’s heartfelt “Dedication Night.”

Robert dedicated his dance to his mother, Terri, calling her “an absolute hero” for keeping his father’s legacy alive while raising him and his sister, Bindi Irwin, after Steve’s tragic death in 2006.

“I was 2 when I lost Dad,” Robert shared in rehearsal with pro partner Witney Carson. “As I got older, I realized just how hard it must have been for Mum to keep Dad’s spirit alive while being there for us. I wanted to show her how proud Dad would be of her.”

A Tribute That Moved Everyone to Tears

Robert and Witney performed a breathtaking contemporary dance to Phil Collins’ classic “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Disney’s Tarzan soundtrack. The emotional performance became even more poignant when Terri Irwin joined them on stage midway through the routine — creating a beautiful and symbolic moment of family unity and love.

As the music swelled, the trio moved together in perfect harmony, celebrating strength, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and son.

The touching moment brought both the audience and judges to tears. Bruno Tonioli praised Robert’s vulnerability, saying:

“He’s looking at you, kid, and he’s smiling. You gave us all of your heart and soul. This was the true expression of everlasting love.”

Carrie Ann Inaba was also deeply moved, adding:

“I’ve never had kids, but Terri — if I could, I’d want them to be like him.”

Derek Hough’s Emotional Reaction

No one was more affected than Derek Hough, who has a long history with the Irwin family after partnering with Bindi Irwin during her winning season on DWTS in 2015. Through tears, Hough told Robert:

“The love I have for your family — I just have so much love for you guys. You’ve become such an amazing man, and the world needs the Irwin family.”

Robert and Witney earned a season-high score of 35 out of 40, marking one of the standout performances of Dancing With the Stars Season 34.

A Message to All Mothers and Families

After the performance, Robert dedicated his dance not only to Terri but also to all mothers and single parents who work tirelessly for their families.

“This is for anyone who’s lost someone, who feels lost,” he said emotionally. “Keep going — and if you can, call your mum and tell her you love her.”

It was a deeply human moment that reminded viewers why the Irwin family continues to inspire millions around the world — carrying forward Steve Irwin’s legacy of love, courage, and compassion.

Dancing With the Stars airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC and Disney+, and streams the next day on Hulu.
